When I Fall In Love

About this CD....

I gave Melissa guitar lessons for a little while when she was in the eighth grade. She got through the lesson book in record time; I could tell she was a "natural". But I lose most of my students when they begin high school, and Melissa was no exception. Too many other activities; too much homework.

I heard her sing in the high school musical the fall of her senior year, and realized that she was as talented a vocalist as a guitarist. We talked about doing a CD, but it wasn't until spring that she had time. Then we had to decide what style, and then what songs she wanted to do. With perhaps just a bit of gentle persuasion, she started learning jazz. She listened to all the jazz vocalists she could, and "jammed" with Rich and Frank and me over the spring and summer. Finally, just as she was about to leave for college, we had enough material and practice to begin recording. She would sing five or six songs when she was home for a break, and we'd work on the instrumental parts the rest of the time. She also played flute on three very difficult arrangements by Rich, borrowing my flute if her's wasn't in town.

This CD is the result, and what a result it is. The time we took doing this has paid off wonderfully. But rather than tell you about it, we'll let you listen and decide for yourself. Melissa is young -- she's only 18. But her talent is immediately evident, and this CD captures her at her finest. By itself, it is a remarkable accomplishment; given her age, one can easily imagine what musical achievements still lie ahead.
